Kathy R. Griffin, Ph.D.

Age 69, of Pittsburgh, on Tuesday, June 2, 2026. Beloved wife of Steven Irvin. Cherished godmother of Ashley (Fred Dela Cruz) Chancellor, and José (Katie Madjerich) Graham. Loving sister of Kenneth (Deborah) Griffin and the late Richard (Lisa--still surviving) Griffin. Daughter of the late Raymond and Helen (Dibert) Griffin. Kathy is also survived by a nephew, Richard (Carlin) Griffin; great-nephew, Xavier Griffin; great-niece, Lu Griffin; and cousins, Randy Chancellor, Tammy Bucklew, and Raymond Chancellor.

Kathy Griffin passed away surrounded by the love of family, friends, and the many lives she touched throughout her journey. She was a devoted wife, educator, mentor, aunt, godmother, friend, and faithful member of her community.

Kathy earned her Ph.D. from Duquesne University and spent many years teaching at the Art Institute. To her students, she was affectionately known as "Mom G" or "Dr. G." She had a remarkable gift for making people feel accepted and valued exactly as they were. Her classroom was more than a place of learning—it was a place of belonging. The countless students whose lives she influenced stand as part of her enduring legacy.

Above all else, Kathy loved people. She cherished her family, friends, church family, neighbors, and all those fortunate enough to know her. Her greatest contribution to the world was her unwavering presence for those she loved. She listened, encouraged, celebrated, and walked alongside others through life's joys and challenges.

Kathy shared a deep and abiding bond with her husband, Steve. Together they were not only spouses but best friends who genuinely enjoyed experiencing life side by side. Their connection was built on friendship, laughter, companionship, and love.

She was devoted to the animals who brought so much joy to her life, including her beloved dogs, Casper, Luna, and Bella, as well as her cherished hens.

Kathy was a loving aunt to her beloved nephew Rick, whom she loved dearly, and embraced his wife, Carlin, along with their children, Xavier and Lu, as treasured members of her family. She was also a proud and devoted godmother to Ashlee, whose accomplishments brought her great joy. In Kathy's final days, Ashlee lovingly helped care for her, offering comfort, companionship, and unwavering support. Kathy was deeply grateful for the special bond they shared. She also shared a particularly close relationship with her godson, Jose, whose connection with her was marked by mutual love, affection, and friendship.

Kathy's warmth extended far beyond her family and workplace. She was deeply connected to her North Side neighborhood and the people who called it home. In true North Side fashion, whenever Kathy stepped outside, her neighbor Daniene would call out, "Hi Kathy!" and Kathy would happily call back, "Hi Daniene!" Their daily greetings became a cherished ritual and reflected the special bond they shared. As with so many young people in her life, Kathy had a gift for making others feel seen, valued, and loved.

The family would also like to express heartfelt gratitude to Ashlee for her loving care and support during Kathy's final days, and to Dr. Ari and the dedicated staff at Allegheny General Hospital, whose compassion, care, and support helped Kathy throughout her journey.

Perhaps Kathy's spirit can best be captured by a simple moment. When leaving the hospital for the last time, she was asked what she wanted to wear home. Her answer was immediate: "Get my red dress from behind the door." It was a response that reflected the strength, dignity, grace, and unmistakable spirit with which she lived her life.

Friends and family are invited to a Celebration of Life Gathering for Kathy, on Thursday, July 2, 2026, at 6:00 p.m., at the Edgeworth Club, 511 East Drive, Sewickley, PA 15143.
