Sr. Bernadette Young, CDP Obituary

Age 86, of McCandless Township, on Sunday, January 20, 2013. Sr. Bernadette was born on July 28, 1926. A Sister of Divine Providence, formerly known as Sister Mary John, CDP died peacefully at Providence Heights. She was born in New Philadelphia, Ohio and was a member of Sacred Heart Parish. At age 20 she entered the community of the Sisters of Divine Providence. Throughout the next 75 years, she faithfully and joyfully served God and others in the dioceses of Pittsburgh, PA. Sister Bernadette earned Bachelor of Arts degree in education from Duquesne University a Master of Science in Education from Dayton University and a Doctor of Philosophy in Education from the University of Pittsburgh. For years she taught in elementary education at Cecelia in Rochester, St. Mary's in Beaver Fall and St. Martin's in West End and St. Cecilia's in Glassport. She was always a very kind and gentle teacher. In the early 1950s she interned in the field of College administration a Marillac College, and then served nine years at the newly found La Roche College as Registrar and Dean of Admissions. Bernadette was then invited to be a campus minister at Carnegie Mellon, Pitt and Chatham University. Thirty years later, with a busy schedule she always spoke with enthusiasm of her work. Time was also spent with the Oratory and St. Paul Cathedral Parish with the RCIA Program. Sister Bernadette received the La Roche College Award Woman of Providence for 2012. Her long career as an educator, counselor, administrator and campus minister is a testament of her deep faith and love to touch those in need. Sister Bernadette was predeceased by her parents, Mary and John Young; by her sister, Mary Fister and Joanne Zucal. She is survived by her sister, Sister Muriel Young, CDP, by nieces and nephews, by all the sisters of her religious Congregation and by countless friends. Friends received at Providence Heights Tuesday, 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. and Wednesday from noon to 3:00 p.m. Wake service Tuesday at 7 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. in the Mother of Divine Providence Chapel.
