Sr. Elizabeth Apel, CDP

Age 85, of McCandless Township, on Thursday, July 25, 2013. Entered the Sisters of Our Lady of Charity in 1954 from St. Kieran's Parish in Lawrenceville, PA. Served as formation director for postulants and novices, and later ministered as a social worker. Sr. Elizabeth was in the community for 20 years and was in residence at Gilmary. In 1974 she transferred to the Sisters of Divine Providence. Sr. Elizabeth earned a bachelor's degree from Duquesne University and a master's in social work from the University of Pittsburgh. She served in the Diocese of Youngstown Ohio as Director of Planning for 20 years. Her love for working in a healing ministry took her to the Pittsburgh area in 1997 to work as a chaplain with Trinity Hospice and Gateway Hospice for 12 years. Sr. Elizabeth is survived by her brother, Edwin Apel; 18 nieces and nephews; and 45 great -nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Elizabeth Guentner Apel; three brothers and six sisters. Friends will be received at Providence Heights on Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Wake Service at 7 p.m. Visitation Monday from 12 - 3:30 p.m. followed by Mass of Christian Burial, Divine Providence Chapel at 4 p.m. Memorials may be made to the Sisters of Divine Providence Retirement Fund, 9000 Babcock Boulevard, Allison Park, PA 15101 or at www. divineprovidence web.org.
