Sr. Genevieve Brandstetter, CDP Obituary

Age 95, of McCandless Township died peacefully at Providence Heights on Wednesday, October 28, 2015. Sr. Genevieve (Formerly Sr. Generosa) was born December 14, 1919 in Niles, Ohio. She attended St. Mary's Grade School in Ford City, PA and Providence High School. She entered the Sisters of Divine Providence on August 30, 1936. Throughout the next 79 years she faithfully and joyfully served God through the wonderful gift of music. Sr. Genevieve taught elementary school music in the Diocese of Pittsburgh at St. Basils - Carrick, St. Mary's - Glenshaw, St. Alphonsus - Springdale and served on the Diocesan musicians' committee. She was most comfortable with numerous private students - children and adults. Sr. Genevieve was director of postulants for the Sisters of Divine Providence for 13 years. In 1980 she embarked on a new career as co-director of St. Ambrose Manor for senior citizens for 13 years, and then moved to Providence Heights where she directed the liturgical music for the Sisters of Divine Providence. Retirement was not in Sr. Genevieve's vocabulary. She continued to give piano lessons and shared her talent and love of liturgy with the residents at Cumberland Crossing Personal Care Home. Sister Genevieve received a B.S. in Public School Music and a Master of Music from Duquesne University. She furthered her studies in music at Boston University, & Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. She learned to play every instrument so that she was better able to serve her students. Sr. Genevieve was preceded in death by her parents Joseph B. and Hubertina Breitmyer, and her brother Albert D. She is survived by cousins and many friends. She is fondly remembered by her many friends and former music students. Relatives and friends will be received at Providence Heights on Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. with Wake Service at 7:00 p.m. Visitation on Saturday from 12-3:30 p.m. with Mass of Christian Burial at 4:00 p.m. in Divine Providence Chapel.
