On September 8, 1963, Judith Anne Rotunda, later known as Sister George Anne, entered the Sisters of Divine Providence from Our Lady Help of Christians Parish in Pittsburgh. She was the daughter of Helen Pienkowski and Joseph Rotunda and the beloved sister of Ross, George, and Joseph. Sister Judith was also a member of the first freshman class of La Roche College. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from La Roche College, a Master of Arts degree in Education from Duquesne University, and an Elementary Principal Certificate from Carlow College.

Throughout her years of ministry, Sister Judith devoted herself to Catholic education. She taught at St. Alphonsus School in Springdale, St. Rose of Lima School in Altoona, and All Saints School in Etna. She later served as principal of All Saints School and St. Aloysius School in Mt. Troy and as co-principal of Providence Heights Alpha School in Allison Park. Her leadership was especially evident following the devastating flood that struck Etna during her tenure at All Saints. Watermarks remained visible high on the school walls, equipment and furnishings were damaged, and extensive sanitization was required. What initially appeared to be an overwhelming situation became an opportunity for renewal. Putting on her “fishing boots” and trusting firmly that Providence would provide, Sister Judith worked tirelessly to restore the school and make it better than before.

After many years of serving God’s children, Sister Judith embraced a new ministry as manager of Saint Ambrose Manor in Spring Hill. Whether working with students or senior citizens, she carried a profound sense of responsibility for those entrusted to her care. Her concern for others, practical wisdom, and steady presence brought comfort and encouragement to countless individuals throughout her years of service.

Sister Judith was a woman of many talents and interests. She loved knitting and created numerous afghans that warmed both homes and hearts. As technology advanced, she discovered new ways to express her creativity, designing beautiful cards on the computer. Her happiest moments were often spent in the kitchen, where she honored her mother’s recipes while adding her own special touches. Family and friends occupied a treasuredplace in her heart. She delighted in gatherings with cousins, nieces, and nephews and remained closely connected to classmates through reunions at her alma mater, Divine Providence Academy. She often reflected on a sermon that reminded listeners that all people are blessed and should live with gratitude to God.

Those who knew Sister Judith recognized a remarkable gift for navigating life’s challenges. A native Pittsburgher, she developed an ability to assess difficult situations and search patiently for solutions. Whether finding the last parking space on a crowded street in the Strip District or comforting a child anxious about a new school environment, she had a way of making the impossible seem manageable. She took great satisfaction in parallel parking on a busy city street, but she found even greater joy in helping people discover hope and confidence for the future. Throughout her life and ministry, Sister Judith sought to be a blessing to others so that they, in turn, could become blessings along their own journeys.

We give thanks for Sister Judith’s faithful life of service, her steadfast trust in Providence, her creativity, and her loving care for all whom she encountered. May she now rest in eternal peace, forever immersed in the boundless love of God.

Inurnment for Sr. Judith Anne will take place in Providence Heights Sisters' Cemetery immediately following the Funeral Mass.
