Sister Phyllis (formerly Sister Philip) went to her eternal reward on Tuesday, January 5, 2021, at the age of 80. She was born in McKeesport, PA to Philip and Josephine (Majzer) Scello, and was baptized at St. Peter’s Church there. She entered the Sisters of Divine Providence in 1956 from St. Mary’s Parish (Olive Street) McKeesport. Sister Phyllis made Final Vows on August 9, 1964. For almost fifty years, Sister Phyllis served as an Elementary teacher and principal in Catholic schools in the Dioceses of Pittsburgh and Greensburg. Those schools in which she ministered the longest include six years as teacher and five years as principal at Nativity School in South Park (1979-90) and ten years as principal of James Lavelle Catholic School in West Mifflin (1995-2005). She received her Bachelor’s degree from LaRoche University and her Master’s from Duquesne University. At the time of her Golden Jubilee Sister Phyllis expressed: “As Jesus said, ‘Let the children come to me.’ This is what I did in all my years of teaching and in administration. I found it to be a gift that was most satisfying. It always brought me much joy." She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Philip, and sister, Rosemary Smay Molchan. Sister Phyllis is survived by loving nieces Anna, Lori and Theresa, the Sisters of Divine Providence and their Associates. Friends received Friday, January 8, 2021 from 12:30 p.m. until time of Mass of Christian Burial at 2:30 p.m., at St. Teresa of Avila Church, 1000 Avila Court, Pittsburgh, PA 15237. Burial to follow in Providence Heights Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be sent to Sisters of Divine Providence, 9000 Babcock Boulevard, Allison Park, PA 15101. Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, CDC and PA State guidelines are being followed. Therefore, facial masks and social distancing are required while visiting the church and attending Mass.
